The Office of Information Technology is committed to safeguarding your credentials, your privacy, and your paycheck. In the span of a week, two faculty were impersonated by malicious actors using stolen personal information to trick the Help Desk into adding a rogue device to their respective DUO accounts. In turn, this enabled the criminals to circumvent the multi-factor authentication process (DUO) and led to further compromises of the employee’s data and access.
To further protect you and your personal information, any security-related requests to your account or your DUO settings will include a brief Zoom call with one of our IT Help Desk agents. This step helps ensure that you, and only you, can make changes to your account.
What You Can Expect:
- You request a DUO or account change.
- Our Help Desk will schedule a brief Zoom video call (video required).
- Our Help Desk agent will turn on their camera and identify themselves.
- We will verify your password question and last 4 SSN digits.
- We will ask you to show your photo ID to verify your identity visually.
We know your time is valuable, and our goal is to make this process as quick and simple as possible. But we’re making this change to stop fraud before it starts — and to make sure you stay in control of your own account.
If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the Office of Information Technology at oit@uci.edu.
